A newborn baby is lucky to be alive after a passerby heard her crying inside a storm drain. The bystander jumped into a ditch and was able to see the newborn trapped inside the pipe. Rescue workers in Durban, South Africa rushed to the scene and began working to remove the young girl from the drain.
The rescue crew had to use a chisel and hammer to break the drain in order to extract the newborn. It took them nearly four hours to get the infant out of the pipe. Video captured the dramatic moment when workers pulled the newborn from the drain.
The baby, who still had her umbilical cord attached, was flown to the hospital for emergency care. Hospital officials said that the infant suffered from hypothermia and had other minor injuries but is expected to survive.
"It's really a miracle that this baby was saved. The doctors have given this baby a clean bill of health, and she will be transferred to another hospital," regional health official Dr. Sibongiseni Dhlomo said in a statement.
Authorities said they are investigating the case as an attempted murder and are trying to determine how the infant ended up in the storm drain.
